Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 kicks off

Held in Ireland, the eighth edition of the Women’s Rugby World Cup kicks off today, with England playing Spain at 1.30pm

As reigning world champions (England won 21-9 against Canada in 2013) and the number one side in the world rankings, all eyes will no doubt be on England’s performance. However, there is confidence within the team who are the only team in Ireland who have trained full-time since January – so an England win is expected.

The pool stages will be held at  University College Dublin with the semi finals and finals being held at Queen’s University Belfast and Kingspan Stadium in Belfast.

The tournament is actually taking place three years after the last Women’s Rugby World Cup: this is due to World Rugby wanting to move away from clashing with the Sevens World Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2018. However, the event will return to a four-year cycle after this year’s competition.

Also playing today at 6.30pm will be Ireland versus Australia with the final being held on Saturday 26th August.
