When is the right time to move?

POSTED ON 20 MARCH 2017

There are many things you need to consider when making the move including the location and your budget. But when is the right time to do it?

When it comes to moving, it’s often the case that several elements impact the time when you can actually make that move. It all depends on how long it takes for you to sell your property and find your new home, agree a price, then exchange contracts. After that you also have the added element of waiting for the rest of the chain of properties to go through the motions, enabling you to then complete and move into your new home.

However, despite these factors and their impact, you can still be in charge of when you move – whether it’s into a property you’re buying or into rented accommodation. How? By choosing when to start the process! According to removals firm Pickfords, if you are able to pick your move date, then the best times to move are either late spring or just after the summer holidays as that’s the time that most moving companies are less busy. As a result, their rates are likely to be lower too. Bear in mind however, that if you decide to move at a weekend, then the rate you pay tends to be higher!

School holidays

If you have children in school, you may want to consider working around the school calendar so that your move can be tied to their holidays, rather than doing it during term time. The biggest time gap for moving during school holidays is the summer break as most schools have six weeks off – which will give you plenty of time to get you moved and settled in before they head back off to school. Doing this will also allow your children to adjust to the idea of moving and, if you are changing schools too, saying goodbye to their friends.

Christmas

However, although moving during school holidays is a good idea, it’s advised that you avoid Christmas if you can. Moving at this time can be more costly – and the weather isn’t always ideal at that time of year for moving your precious cargo! In addition, Christmas can be quite a hectic time as it is meeting up with friends and family, and wrapping presents, so you may prefer not to have the added pressure of getting into your new home in time for the festivities. However, if you do opt for a Christmas time move, organisation is key, so remember to plan everything in advance!

Is there really a perfect time?

The simple answer to this is that there is never a perfect time to move. There’s no magic formula to achieve the ideal move. In fact, the best time of the year to move is ultimately down to you, your job, your wife/husband, your location and what your needs are.

And perhaps one of the most important things to remember when moving home is the benefit of hiring a professional removals company. Using one can help to ensure that the process of moving home is as simple and stress-free as possible – whatever time of the year you choose.
